Nabble forum/mailing list mirror

I received the following email about Nabble:

From: no-reply@nabble.com
To: jwe@octave.org
Subject: Your Nabble Forum
Date: Wed, 21 Jul 2021 20:14:05 +0000

We are downsizing Nabble to one server. If you want to preserve your forum:

https://octave.1599824.n4.nabble.com/

Then you should follow the instructions here:

http://support.nabble.com/Downsizing-Nabble-tp7609715.html

What do you think? Should we try to preserve it? I suppose many messages in the mailing list archive at gnu.org probably link to discussions using Nabble URLs, so maybe it would be good to preserve the forum if those would continue to work in the future.

Comments?

Thanks for the pointer @jwe . I think it is worth giving it a try. However, I do not understand what they are going to do and I asked there to get an idea what will be necessary

Without a reply to my request, Nabble seemed to have moved/shutdown the Octave forum :man_shrugging:

https://octave.1599824.n4.nabble.com/

I’d like to preserve it. It is a very long time series of question and answers about Octave, and some of it is probably still useful.

Most messages there are also in the mailing list archive. The ones that are missing are ones that were posted using the nabble interface by people who were not subscribed to the mailing list and then for some reason or other the messages were never approved for posting. Nabble would just show those messages before waiting to see whether they were allowed for posting to the list. Otherwise, nabble just worked as a mailing list archive. The other thing that we lose if the nabble archive disappears or changes location are all the links to messages that use URLs pointing to nabble.com instead of the GNU project mailing list archive.
